In July 2025, EMUNI submitted a comprehensive set of recommendations to the European Commission’s Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, contributing to the shaping of the New Pact for the Mediterranean.Rooted in its mission to connect both shores of the Mediterranean through education,
EMUNI’s proposals focus on leveraging higher education and research as tools for regional stability, development, and cooperation. Key recommendations include:
● Expanding Erasmus+ mobility for Southern Mediterranean students through more funding, simpler procedures, and tailored opportunities like summer schools and internships.
● Launching Euro-Mediterranean University Alliances, inspired by the European Universities Initiative, to deepen academic ties and foster joint degrees, mobility, and
research.
● Creating a Euro-Mediterranean Higher Education Area (EMHEA), harmonizing
credit systems, diploma recognition, and quality assurance for enhanced academic
integration.
● Positioning EMUNI as a key implementing partner, offering to coordinate
alliances, facilitate mobility, and act as a regional hub through its Knowledge &
Innovation Centres (EKICs).
● Inviting the European Commission to join EMUNI’s governance, similar to
partnerships with the College of Europe and European University Institute.
EMUNI’s strategic vision aligns with EU priorities for the Mediterranean and offers practical
pathways to enhance mobility, reduce youth unemployment, and foster intercultural
understanding across the region.
