Koper, 17 March 2026 – EMUNI University, in collaboration with the Science and Research Centre Koper (ZRS Koper), today hosted the presentation and signing of a letter of intent for the establishment of a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC). The initiative marks a significant milestone in advancing long-term institutional cooperation across the Northern Adriatic region and the wider Euro-Mediterranean area.
The proposed EGTC aims to create a strategic platform that will enhance collaboration in research, innovation, and knowledge exchange, while also strengthening ties between academia, public institutions, and the business sector. A key focus of the initiative is to deepen cross-border cooperation with partners in Italy and Croatia, reinforcing the region’s role as a dynamic hub for innovation and development.
The event, held at EMUNI University in Koper, brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives of municipalities, regional institutions, development agencies, business organizations, and public bodies. Their participation reflects a shared commitment to building stronger institutional partnerships and improving access to European funding opportunities.
A highlight of the event was the presence of the Slovenian Minister for Cohesion and Regional Development, Dr Aleksander Jevšek, whose attendance underscored the national importance of the initiative.
During the meeting, EMUNI University and ZRS Koper presented the core objectives of the EGTC, alongside examples of successful cross-border projects implemented in cooperation with Italian and Croatian partners. These projects demonstrate the strong potential of the Northern Adriatic region to evolve into a leading innovation ecosystem within the Mediterranean macro-region.
The establishment of the EGTC is expected to further consolidate regional cooperation, support sustainable development, and position the partnership as a key driver of innovation and integration in the Euro-Mediterranean space.
