Join EMUNI at the largest interdisciplinary meeting on science and innovation in Europe

The EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) is a pan-European, general science conference dedicated to scientific research and innovation. It is held biennially, with its 2020 edition taking place in Trieste, between 2 and 6 September.

EMUNI has been supporting the organization of ESOF in Trieste since the bid. It is contributing two panel discussions to the programme. On Saturday, 5.9. at 14.30, it is hosting the panel titled “How to govern an effective science-policy interface? Lessons from the existing initiatives in addressing the Euro-Mediterranean challenges”. Through case studies from the Euro-Mediterranean region, the panel will be concerned with the questions on how to structure a successful science-policy dialogue and the criteria of success for such a dialogue. This panel relates to the core of EMUNI’s mission.

The second panel will be held on 6.9. at 12.00. Titled “Lost in the sea? Can science guide citizens in seafood consumer decisions?” the panel starts from the premise that the consumers, through their choices, increasingly want to contribute to sustainability of our food systems and the planet. But they often lack the information and knowledge on what kind of decisions to take. In the panel, we will be concerned with whether science can help them to make better decisions, taking into account the requirements of ecological sustainability of fisheries, social standards, nutrition recommendations and findings of behavioral sciences. This panel builds on the research projects run by EMUNI in the area of blue economy and transnational standards.

Prof. Dr. Abdelhamid El Zoheiry is participating as a speaker in the panel Blue skills to feed jobs in the Mediterranean and Black Sea Region, organised on Friday, 4.9. at 10.15. The panel will explore the factors that contribute to the difficulties in finding the right employees to support a sustainable blue economy of the future, a sector of economy that is particularly important to the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions.

Additionally, Dr. Jerneja Penca will be a speaker at the webinar organised by the International Association of Lawyers, on the occassion of ESOF. The webinar SCIENCE & LAW – Environmental Protection and Climate Change – (How) can law respond to scientific challenges? will be broadcast on Friday, 4.9. at 16.00.

Much of the ESOF’s progamme is moving online, which widens the possibilities for participation in this unique science and society event. A number of stimulating debates around the latest advancements and discoveries in the sciences, humanities and social sciences will be offered.
