HALS Summer School: learning, moving and cooking together

Summer School on Healthy and Active Lifestyle in the Euro-Mediterranean (HALS) took place in Piran between 15 and 21 July 2019, bringing together 14 students from 6 Euro-Mediterranean countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, Germany, Egypt).

The academic staff of a total of 18 professors from 5 countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Germany, Austria) delivered lectures on a wide variety of topics related to healthy and active lifestyle in the Euro-Mediterranean region. Morning lectures covered areas such as introduction to kinesiology and sport science, muscle adaptation to activity and inactivity through simulated microgravity conditions such as bed rest study model, insights into various aspects of ageing, food and nutrition, Mediterranean diet, molecular gastronomy, physical activity and cognition, exercise and prevention of chronic diseases, exercise prescription for better health and rehabilitation.

Students were welcomed at the Euro-Mediterranean University by Prof. Dr. Abdelhamid El-Zoheriy, President of EMUNI and at the Marine Biology Station in Piran by Prof. Dr. Rado Pišot, Director of the Science and Research Centre Koper.

Each afternoon field visits were organized, including visit to the Mediterranean Health Centre in Koper and Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, as well as workshops on topics related to sports testing and measurements, assessing physical activity, dance, preparations for Olympic Games 2020 and the presentation of the Qsport project. A culinary workshop on Mediterranean cooking and diet was also carried out by chef Daniel Pirc.

To wrap up the healthy and active lifestyle in practice, a wide variety of sports activities were organised such as canoeing, stand up paddling (SUP), cycling, beach volley and Nordic walking.
