Finding Peace and Perspective: My Journey Studying Intercultural Business Communication in Slovenia

Moving to Slovenia to pursue my Master’s in Intercultural Business Communication has been more than just an academic step. It has been a journey of personal growth, cultural discovery, and self reflection.

Academic Experience

My studies focus on how people from different cultural backgrounds communicate, collaborate, and understand one another in professional and social contexts. What makes this experience unique is that I am not only learning these concepts in theory, I am living them daily.

In class, I engage with diverse perspectives that challenge how I think and communicate. This has pushed me to become more open, adaptable, and aware of the subtle ways culture influences interaction. It has also strengthened my confidence in expressing myself while respecting different viewpoints.

Living in Slovenia

Life in Slovenia has introduced me to a slower, more balanced way of living. Compared to the fast paced environments I was used to, I have found a sense of calm and structure here.

Simple routines such as walking through nature, enjoying quiet moments, and being present have become meaningful parts of my daily life. This environment has allowed me to not only focus on my studies but also to reconnect with myself.

The school also organised trips to Ljubljana, Lake Bled, and Lake Bohinj, which created a great opportunity to interact with other students outside the classroom. These experiences made it easier to connect, share stories, and build meaningful bonds.

Cultural Experience

As an international student, every interaction becomes a learning experience. From communication styles to social expectations, I have become more aware of how culture shapes the way we relate to one another.

Coming from Kenya and now living in a European context, I have become even more aware of both the differences and the connections between cultures. I have learned to navigate these differences with curiosity rather than assumption.

My studies in intercultural communication have helped me understand these experiences more deeply, allowing me to approach situations with empathy and awareness.

Personal Reflection

Beyond academics, this journey has been deeply personal. Being away from everything familiar has given me space to reflect on my values, my relationships, and my direction in life.

I have learned the importance of choosing peace, setting boundaries, and embracing growth without forcing things. In many ways, I feel like I am not just studying intercultural communication, I am living it, both externally with others and internally within myself.

Final Thoughts

Studying in Slovenia has shown me that education is not limited to the classroom. It is in the people you meet, the culture you experience, and the personal growth you undergo along the way.

For anyone considering studying here, I would say come with an open mind. You will gain knowledge, but more importantly, you will gain perspective and perhaps even a deeper understanding of yourself.
