On 29 September 2026, President of EMUNI University Prof. Dr. Rado Bohinc held a series of high-level meetings in Malta aimed at strengthening academic cooperation and developing new partnerships across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
Slovenia and Malta, although among the smaller Member States of the European Union, occupy important positions within the Mediterranean space. Located at different points along Europe’s Mediterranean dimension, the two countries share a strong interest in strengthening dialogue, connectivity and cooperation across the region. Their partnership can contribute to building stronger links between European institutions and the wider Mediterranean, particularly through higher education, research and academic mobility.
During his visit, President Bohinc met at the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) with H.E. Dr George Vella, President Emeritus of Malta and Chairman of MEDAC, and Prof. Stephen Calleya, Director of MEDAC.
Later in the day, President Bohinc met with the Rector of the University of Malta, Prof. Frank Bezzina, together with Prof. Leonie Baldacchino, Pro-Rector for Internationalisation, Enterprise and Outreach, and Prof. Norbert Bugeja, Director of the Mediterranean Institute.
The discussions explored opportunities for closer cooperation between EMUNI University and the University of Malta, with particular attention to areas of common interest and the potential development of initiatives benefiting students, academics and the wider Mediterranean higher education community.
The meetings also reflected the shared commitment of EMUNI and its Maltese partners to strengthening cooperation across the Mediterranean. By connecting universities, institutions and people, higher education can serve as an important bridge for dialogue and collaboration between different parts of the region.
The visit builds on EMUNI’s wider mission to connect institutions across the Euro-Mediterranean area and to foster academic cooperation, mobility, research and intercultural dialogue.
President Bohinc was accompanied during the meetings by H.E. Jesmond Cutajar, Ambassador of Malta to Slovenia, whose support contributed to facilitating the discussions and strengthening the institutional links between Malta and EMUNI.
