The Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI) brought together key European and Mediterranean stakeholders to advance one of the most ambitious education initiatives in the region—the Mediterranean University.
The high-level discussion gathered representatives of the European Commission’s DG MENA, Slovenian Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Slovenian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, experts in the field of Euro-Mediterranean and European affairs, EMUNI Management Board members, and department leads, to address a central question: how to best support the European Commission in turning this political vision into a concrete and operational reality.
At the heart of the debate was the way to move from concept to implementation. Participants explored how the initiative can be delivered through strong North–South university partnerships, joint study programmes, and increased mobility for students and researchers.
“The Mediterranean University has the potential to become a flagship initiative for the region,” said Prof. Dr. Rado Bohinc, President of EMUNI.
A strong message emerging from the discussion was the importance of building on existing structures. Participants emphasised that established Euro–Mediterranean institutions and networks provide a solid foundation for scaling up cooperation and delivering results more effectively.
As a university founded within the framework of the Barcelona Process, EMUNI brings nearly two decades of experience in connecting institutions across both shores of the Mediterranean. During the discussion, the University reaffirmed its readiness to take on an active operational role in the initiative.
“EMUNI is ready to contribute as an operational partner, including by playing a central role in the Secretariat of the Mediterranean University, the university consortia, and joint academic programmes,” dr. Bohinc added.
The discussion also highlighted Slovenia’s strong commitment to the initiative and its role in supporting a balanced, inclusive, and sustainable approach to Euro–Mediterranean cooperation.
The event marks an important step forward in shaping the Mediterranean University as a key initiative under the Pact for the Mediterranean—one that can strengthen partnerships, empower young people, and foster long-term cooperation across the region.
