EMUNI and ESOF2020: Exploring Science and Innovation

The EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) is a pan-European, general science conference dedicated to scientific research and innovation and is held biennially. EMUNI supported ESOF in its bid to bring the largest interdisciplinary meeting on contemporary science in Europe to the city of Trieste, where the 2020 edition recently took place between 2 and 6 September.

Full credit must be given to the organisers of ESOF2020 Trieste for having staged this successful event, where social media networking proved stronger than previous years along with more flexibility in choice of sessions for virtual participants.

EMUNI University took part in four events during the five-day conference.

Our institution contributed to two panel discussions featured in the ESOF2020 programme. On Saturday, 5.9, EMUNI hosted the panel titled “How to govern an effective science-policy interface? Lessons from the existing initiatives in addressing the Euro-Mediterranean challenges,” a topic related to the core of EMUNI’s mission. Using case studies from the Euro-Mediterranean region, the panel focused on how to structure a successful science-policy dialogue and the criteria of success required.

The second panel held on 6.9 titled “Lost in the sea? Can science guide citizens in seafood consumer decisions?” discussed how science can help consumers contribute to the sustainability of our food systems and the planet, taking into account the requirements of the ecological sustainability of fisheries, social standards, nutritional recommendations and findings of behavioural sciences. This topic builds on the research projects run by EMUNI in the area of blue economy and transnational standards.

The EMUNI President, Prof. Dr. Abdelhamid El Zoheiry, was also a panel speaker for Blue skills to feed jobs in the Mediterranean and Black Sea Region, on Friday, 4.9, during which participants explored the factors that contribute to the difficulties in finding the right employees to support a sustainable blue economy of the future, a sector of the economy that is particularly important to the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions.

Additionally, Dr. Jerneja Penca was a speaker at the webinar organised by the International Association of Lawyers, titled SCIENCE & LAW – Environmental Protection and Climate Change – (How) can law respond to scientific challenges?  on Friday, 4.9.

EMUNI University looks forward to the EuroScience Open Forum 2022, which will be hosted in Leiden/The Hague, The Netherlands.
