Register for First Inaugural Lecture to be Held at EMUNI

The Education Department of the Euro-Mediterranean University is delighted to announce the first inaugural lecture of its kind will take place at EMUNI this April.

Dr. Mateja SEDMAK, the first Full Professor appointed by EMUNI, will deliver her lecture on Wednesday, 21 April at 12.00 CET titled Thinking Beyond: Critical Reflection on Culture and Ethnicity.

The lecture will critically reflect on essentialist everyday assumptions regarding culture, ethnicity, ethnic groups and boundaries, discussing the inaccuracy of the concept of monoculturalism, cultural pluralism and interculturality as social facts, and interculturalism as the management of cultural diversity. The lecture will also analyse the perspectives of authors in this field, Homi Bhabha and Wolfgang Welsch.

Dr. Sedmak has a Ph.D in Sociology and is a Scientific Councillor at the Science and Research Centre Koper (ZRS Koper), Slovenia, and Head of the Institute for Social Sciences. She has led many national and international projects, including the project Migrant Children and Communities in a Transforming Europe (MiCREATE), funded under the Research and Innovation Grant Scheme, in addition to Horizon 2020. Her publishing work is also recognized nationally and internationally. Dr. Sedmak was the leader of the preparation expert group for the accreditation of the Doctoral study programme in Globalization, Cultural Pluralism and Modern Societies developed in collaboration with EMUNI University and ZRS Koper.
