In celebration of World Oceans Day, EMUNI University, together with the EUNICoast European University Alliance, will host a full day of engaging Ocean Literacy activities at the historic Praetorian Palace in Koper. The event is free of charge and open to the public, welcoming children, students, families, educators, and all citizens interested in learning more about the sea and the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.
Organised within the framework of the EUNICoast project, co-funded by the European Commission through the European Universities Initiative, the event aims to raise awareness about the vital role oceans play in our lives and inspire communities to become active stewards of the marine environment.
A Day of Learning, Discovery and Creativity
Throughout the day, visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a diverse programme of educational, interactive and creative workshops led by EMUNI University and its partners.
The Regional Museum of Koper will offer workshops for children aged 9–14, introducing them to local maritime heritage and the historical relationship between coastal communities and the sea.
Morigenos – the Slovenian Marine Mammal Society will engage participants through activities focused on dolphins and marine mammals of the northern Adriatic, highlighting ongoing research and conservation efforts.
Visitors will also be able to explore a unique exhibition presented by the Shell Museum of Piran, showcasing the remarkable diversity of marine shells and organisms while emphasizing their ecological significance.
A local fisherman will demonstrate traditional artisanal fishing techniques, providing insight into the cultural heritage of the Adriatic coast through practical demonstrations of fishing nets and knot-making.
For older students, WWF Italy will facilitate interactive educational activities addressing marine conservation, environmental challenges, and sustainable solutions for the future. Several activities will also be available in Italian, ensuring accessibility for the Italian-speaking community in the region.
Creative Activities Organised by EMUNI
In addition to partner-led workshops, EMUNI University will host a range of creative activities designed to inspire young participants.
Through the “Letters to the Ocean” initiative, children will be invited to write messages, wishes and promises addressed to the sea, reflecting on the importance of marine protection and sustainability.
An Ocean-Themed Drawing Competition will encourage children to express their creativity while exploring themes such as marine biodiversity, ocean conservation and sustainable futures. At the end of the day, selected drawings will receive small prizes and gifts, celebrating creativity and environmental awareness.
Additional educational games and interactive activities will be available throughout the event, creating opportunities for learning through play.
Open to Everyone
While several schools from Slovenia and neighbouring regions are expected to attend during the morning hours, the organisers particularly encourage families and members of the public to visit in the afternoon, when activities will continue until 5:00 PM in a more relaxed setting.
The event reflects the mission of EUNICoast to connect universities with local communities and foster dialogue around some of today’s most pressing challenges, including climate change, marine pollution, biodiversity loss and sustainable coastal development.
By bringing together universities, museums, environmental organisations, schools and local stakeholders, Ocean Literacy Day offers a unique opportunity to celebrate our connection with the sea while learning how each of us can contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future.
Participation is free of charge.
We warmly invite everyone to join us on Monday, 8 June, at the Praetorian Palace in Koper and celebrate World Oceans Day through learning, discovery, creativity and community engagement.
