On 8 June 2026, in celebration of World Oceans Day, EMUNI University and the EUNICoast European University Alliance successfully organized a full day of Ocean Literacy Activities at the Praetorian Palace in Koper. The event brought together schools, families, experts, and members of the local community to learn about the importance of oceans, marine biodiversity, and sustainable coastal development.
The activities were organized within the framework of the EUNICoast project, co-funded by the European Commission through the European Universities Initiative, with the aim of promoting ocean literacy and raising awareness about the crucial role oceans play in our daily lives.
More than 120 pupils and students from regional schools participated in the event, contributing to a vibrant and engaging atmosphere throughout the day. Participating schools included Scuola elementare–Osnovna šola Pier Paolo Vergerio il Vecchio, SE-OŠ Vincenzo e Diego de Castro Pirano-Piran, and Gimnazija Koper.
The programme featured a wide range of educational and interactive activities delivered by EMUNI University and its partners. The Regional Museum of Koper introduced participants to the maritime heritage of the region through engaging workshops, while Morigenos – Slovenian Marine Mammal Society offered educational activities focused on dolphins and marine mammals of the northern Adriatic Sea.
Visitors also had the opportunity to explore marine biodiversity through an exhibition presented by the Shell Museum of Piran, showcasing a rich collection of shells and providing insights into the importance of marine ecosystems.
A particular highlight of the day was the participation of Arturo Steffe, Head of the Coastal Waters Protection Division, who demonstrated traditional artisanal fishing techniques and various fishing net knots, sharing valuable knowledge about the maritime traditions of the Adriatic coast and the importance of preserving local fishing heritage.
Participants also enjoyed interactive workshops organized by Shoreline, which introduced children and students to the fascinating world of sharks. Through engaging educational activities, participants learned about shark biology, their ecological importance, common misconceptions surrounding these species, and the need for their conservation in marine ecosystems.
EMUNI University complemented the programme with several creative activities, including the popular “Letters to the Ocean” initiative, where children expressed their wishes, promises, and reflections on protecting the marine environment. Participants also took part in an ocean-themed drawing competition, producing imaginative artwork inspired by marine life, sustainability, and ocean conservation. Small prizes and gifts were awarded to some of the most creative contributions.
The event demonstrated the importance of connecting education, science, culture, and community engagement to foster a deeper understanding of our relationship with the sea. Through interactive learning experiences and collaboration among educational institutions, environmental organizations, museums, and local experts, participants gained valuable knowledge about marine ecosystems and the challenges they face.
EMUNI University would like to thank all partner organizations, schools, teachers, volunteers, and participants who contributed to making the event a great success. The enthusiastic participation of children, students, and families highlighted the growing interest in ocean conservation and sustainable development, reinforcing the importance of continuing such initiatives in the future.
Through events such as Ocean Literacy Day, EMUNI University and the EUNICoast Alliance continue to promote environmental awareness, sustainability, and community engagement, contributing to a more informed and responsible relationship with our oceans and coastal environments.
