On 9 June 2026, EMUNI University proudly celebrates its 18th anniversary—a milestone that reflects nearly two decades of dedication to higher education, research, innovation, and intercultural dialogue across the Mediterranean region.
The Past: Eighteen Years of Growth and Cooperation
EMUNI University was founded in 2008 as one of the flagship initiatives of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), emerging from a shared vision to strengthen academic cooperation and intercultural dialogue across the region. The idea was ambitious: to create a university that would not belong to one nation alone, but would serve the entire Mediterranean community.
From its earliest days, EMUNI was designed as a bridge connecting Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East through higher education and research. The university was established in Slovenia with strong support from governments, universities, and international partners who believed that knowledge and education could play a central role in fostering regional cooperation and sustainable development.
Over the years, EMUNI gradually expanded its activities and influence. What began as a pioneering initiative evolved into a vibrant academic community, bringing together students, academics, researchers, policymakers, and institutions from across the Mediterranean. Through international conferences, research projects, mobility programmes, capacity-building initiatives, and policy dialogues, EMUNI created opportunities for collaboration that transcended borders and cultural differences.
A major achievement of these eighteen years has been the development of an extensive academic network that today includes more than 200 higher education and research institutions. This network has become one of EMUNI’s greatest strengths, creating a platform where ideas, expertise, and innovation can be shared across the region.
Throughout its history, EMUNI has remained faithful to its founding mission: promoting understanding, cooperation, and excellence while addressing the common challenges facing Mediterranean societies. In a region characterized by diversity, EMUNI has consistently demonstrated the power of education to unite people and create opportunities for progress.
The Present: A New Era of Development
While EMUNI’s history is rich with achievements, Today, EMUNI stands stronger than ever. The university has entered a new era characterized by academic growth, increased international visibility, stronger research activity, and expanding regional engagement.
One of the clearest indicators of this progress is the expansion of EMUNI’s educational offer. The university now provides eight study programmes, reflecting its commitment to addressing contemporary global and regional challenges through innovative and interdisciplinary education.
At the same time, EMUNI is experiencing a significant increase in applications and student enrolment. More students are choosing EMUNI because of its international environment, Mediterranean perspective, and commitment to academic excellence. The growing number of applications demonstrates increasing recognition of the university as a destination for students seeking a unique educational experience that combines global relevance with regional engagement.
Research and innovation have also become increasingly important pillars of EMUNI’s activities. The university is actively involved in numerous international and European projects addressing issues such as sustainability, digital transformation, innovation ecosystems, entrepreneurship, education, social development, and intercultural dialogue. These projects contribute not only to scientific knowledge but also to practical solutions that benefit societies throughout the Mediterranean region.
Another significant development has been the establishment of five EMUNI Knowledge and Innovation Centres (EKICs) in the Southern Mediterranean. These centres strengthen EMUNI’s presence across the region and create new opportunities for collaboration, capacity building, entrepreneurship, and knowledge transfer. They represent an important step toward bringing innovation and educational opportunities closer to local communities.
Today, EMUNI is more than a university. It is a platform for dialogue, a catalyst for innovation, and a trusted partner for institutions seeking to work together across borders.
The Future: Expanding Impact Across the Mediterranean
As EMUNI enters its nineteenth year, it does so with confidence, ambition, and a clear sense of purpose.
The challenges facing the Mediterranean region—from climate change and digital transformation to social inclusion, economic development, and geopolitical uncertainty—require new forms of cooperation and innovative solutions. EMUNI is uniquely positioned to contribute to these efforts.
The university’s future will be built on the strong foundations established over the past eighteen years while embracing new opportunities for growth and impact. Expanding educational opportunities, increasing student mobility, strengthening research excellence, and deepening partnerships across the Mediterranean will remain key priorities.
EMUNI will continue to invest in innovative study programmes, international research collaborations, and initiatives that connect academia with society and industry. The university will further strengthen its role as a knowledge hub capable of addressing regional challenges through interdisciplinary and international cooperation.
The continued development of the EKIC network and partnerships throughout the Mediterranean will help bring education, innovation, and entrepreneurship closer to communities where they can have the greatest impact. At the same time, the growing network of partner institutions will create new opportunities for students, researchers, and academic staff.
Most importantly, EMUNI will continue to serve as a bridge between the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean. In an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to connect people, cultures, and ideas is more valuable than ever.
Eighteen years ago, EMUNI was founded on the belief that education could bring the Mediterranean closer together. Today, that vision remains as relevant as ever.
As we celebrate our 18th anniversary, we honour the achievements of the past, embrace the opportunities of the present, and look forward to a future defined by collaboration, innovation, and shared progress.
