2023 Summer School on Blue Economy
In the framework of WP3 – Teaching, of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Blue Economy (CoE-SUBE), a summer school and intensive training on blue economy for mid-career scholars titled “Innovative and transformative capacity building for sustainable blue economy in the Mediterranean”
was held from 24 – 26 May (online sessions), and 5 – 9 June (in person sessions in Piran and Trieste). The summer school and training were addressed to PhD and master students/holders that are teachers themselves and are capable of teaching aspects related to the blue economy to others, working in fields related to sustainable blue economy and interested in the improvement of the skills needed in the blue economy market.
The specific objectives of the training were:
– Acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to improve the teaching and learning methodologies for sustainable blue economy.
– Orient participants on the most up-to-date interactive tools for enhancing the learning experience of their students.
– Allow participants to build educational strategies for sustainable blue economy.
– Critically appraise the current educational models in sustainable blue economy.
In the ToT we offered lessons about sustainable blue economy, biotechnology, fisheries and aquaculture, green shipping, nexus science-policy-society, stakeholders engagement, gender equality, marine spatial planning, renewable energy, deep sea mining. This year the ToT was mainly focused on strengthening the methodology for teaching Sustainable Blue Economy.
The summer school and training were jointly organized with the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS).
Student Boot Camp MED2IaH
The Student Boot Camp was held at the Euro Mediterranean University (EMUNI) in Piran, Slovenia, between 6 and 17 June 2022. Boot camp gathers students from South-Mediterranean partner universities who are the authors of the best digital stories on the topic of interculturalism.
During the 2-week stay in Piran, students attended seven modules in interculturalism, innovation and creativity, leadership, art and event management and participation. At the same time, students participated in the preparation of strategic documents on the internationalisation of home universities. Different activities are organised during the Boot Camp to promote and support intercultural learning. Thirty students and teachers
from Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan presented their country through food, customs, traditional music and objects.
The Student Boot Camp will end on Thursday, 16 June, with an exhibition of students’ art products and a presentation of the best photos and short videos created during their stay in Slovenia. The student Boot Camp hosts 34 students from Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan and 20 lecturers from MED2IaH partner universities. Most of the students and lecturers was in Piran, and some participated in the activities through the e-environmen.
2022 summer school on fisheries and aquaculture
EMUNI summer school on fisheries and aquaculture in the sustainable blue economy came to a close on Friday, 13 May 2022. The summer school spanned over three weeks, divided between a remote period and a face-to-face period taking place in Piran between 9 and 13 May 2022. In the remote period, the students were introduced to the framework of the blue economy and dedicated their time to participate in a web-based simulation on managing fisheries as a natural resource in a dynamic world. During the face-to-face period, the students attended tailored field trips, alongside lectures, workshops and teamwork. They were exposed to contributions by over 20 lecturers and trainers coming from various parts of the Mediterranean region, presenting various scientific and stakeholder perspectives on the domain of fisheries and aquaculture – from their ecological dynamics to their value chains, human and cultural aspects to the major disruption in form of climate change. The theme of fisheries-related of one of the central sectors of the blue economy, and in addition, offers a lens to view multiple challenges, opportunities and conflicts related to other sectors of the blue economy.

BLUES Summer School & UN Decade of Ocean Science
The EMUNI BLUES Summer School “The Blue Economy and Sustainability – the EU and the Mediterranean,” was held in partnership with the OGS (Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale), has officially been endorsed by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development!
The BLUES Project is co-financed by the European Commission through the Jean Monnet Module and has been awarded to EMUNI University for the period 2020-2023.
This year’s endorsed Summer School ran from 1 – 30 June, with the goal of supporting the creation of stable and attractive career pathways and skilled talents that will be needed to support the expansion of marine and maritime sectors.

Summer School on Blue Economy in the Euro-Mediterranean Region 2019
This Summer School was co-organised by the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS, Italy) and the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI, Slovenia). The events in Slovenia were implemented in co-organization by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia.

HALS – Healthy and Active Lifestyle 2019
A week of intense academic courses, lectures and workshops covering key topics in kinesiology (physiology, healthy lifestyle, performance and rehabilitation…). The course is designed to give students a high-quality overview of innovative approaches to kinesiology to make them competent for facing the problems of contemporary lifestyles.

Healthy and Active Lifestyle Summer School (HALS) 2018
Between 3 and 9 September 2018 young kinesiologists gathered in Piran (Slovenia, EU) for a summer school on healthy and active lifestyle. The event was organised by EMUNI and the Science and Research Centre Koper. Intensive academic courses, combined with practical work and experimenting lead to new ideas, innovative approaches and new friendships.

Blue Growth in the Euro-Mediterranean Region Summer School 2018
This summer school, that took place in Piran (Slovenia, EU) and Trieste (Italy, EU), combined face to face sessions and distance learning, reaching out to 20 participants from all over the world. The objective of the summer school was to introduce them to the significance of blue growth for the Euro-Mediterranean region and thereby impact their future careers or studies. The summer school was co-organised by EMUNI and the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS) Italy.
