Summary:

The course features a short history of multiple and changing historical concepts and approaches, including: gender dichotomy and sexual dimorphism (sex and gender, the intertwining of nature and culture, women in history, changing history of masculinity, anthropology from gender perspective: historical turns in women’s lives in Europe and globally). The course also focuses on queer and transgender (the history of queer movements and artifacts, LGBTIQA+ and transgender phenomena in recent history). The seminar will feature categorical pairs in interpreting gender divisions: private/public, personal/political, nature/culture; recent and contemporary gendered citizenship; gendered science and work sphere; the use of gender-inclusive language; gender inclusive policies in education and employment.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

After taking this course, you will gain:

  1. Knowledge of the main transformation of both the conceptions, statuses and roles of genders in different historical contexts from the antique world to the present, mainly in Europe
  2. Knowledge of the different historical categories / concepts and approaches, used by scientists of different disciplines focusing on gender identifications and other issues
  3. Understanding of the importance of genders and their statuses and roles both in personal lives and in the political arena, for instance especially regarding gendered citizenship
  4. Knowledge of the possible gendered positionings in reflections of the career course

Frontal teaching, two-way exchange of knowledge and skills, individual student´s work, group work, presentations

Assessment

Oral exam (joint or individual student presentations followed by a group discussion).
